Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of the intestines that causes abdominal pain, cramping, bloating, gas, mucous in the stool, and change in bowel habits. Although there are no structural problems in the intestines of those with IBS, the intestines are unusually sensitive or there are problems with the way the muscles of the intestine move. The cause isn't clear and may be different for each person. It may be exacerbated by stress, anxiety, or certain foods. IBS can cause significant distress and discomfort and may interfere with daily activities. It is important to discuss your symptoms with your physician.
