A New Category in Minimally Invasive Surgery

Thanks to the latest evolution in surgical technology, physicians now have an effective alternative to traditional open surgery and laparoscopy that allows them to provide patients with the best of both approaches. With the assistance of the da Vinci™ Surgical System, surgeons can now operate using only 1-2 cm incisions, but with greater precision and control than ever before. da Vinci can help surgeons minimize the pain and risk associated with surgery while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.1

While clinical studies support the effectiveness of the da Vinci® System when used in minimally invasive surgery, individual results may vary. Surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System may not be appropriate for every individual. Always ask your doctor about all treatment options, as well as their risks and benefits.

Gynecologic Surgery

For women facing gynecologic surgery, the period of pain, discomfort and extended time away from normal daily activities that usually follows traditional surgery can understandably cause significant anxiety. For complex hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, robot-assisted surgery with the da Vinci® Surgical System may be the most effective, least invasive treatment option. Through tiny, 1-2 cm incisions, surgeons using this system can operate with greater precision and control, minimizing the pain and risk associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes. The da Vinci® Surgical System can be utilized to perform myomectomy and hysterectomy procedures. Robotic surgery might be an option for a range of gynecologic conditions, including cervical and uterine cancer, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, uterine prolapse and menorrhagia or excessive bleeding.

Heart Surgery

While surgery is generally the most effective way to treat disorders of the heart, lungs and esophagus, traditional open surgery has a number of inherent drawbacks caused primarily by making a large incision, splitting of the breastbone, and spreading the ribs to access the thoracic space. Less invasive options are increasingly available for patients including thoracoscopy – the insertion of a miniaturized video camera between the ribs. This approach has limitations and is not well suited to more complex cardiac procedures. Conversely, the da Vinci® Surgical System provides surgeons and patients with what may be the most effective, least invasive treatment alternative for even the most complex cardiothoracic procedures such as mitral valve repair, atrial septal defects, aortic valve repair, and patent foramen ovale. Among the benefits of robotic cardiothoracic surgery are a reduced risk of infection, less blood loss and need for blood transfusions, shorter hospital stay, less pain and scarring, faster recovery and a quicker return to normal activities. Additionally, surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System offers the potential for a better clinical outcome.

Pediatric Urologic Surgery

The advent of robotic surgery has opened the door to many exciting new possibilities for minimally invasive surgery for children. With the da Vinci ® S Surgical System, the surgeon only needs to make small incisions, which translates into decreased blood loss, reduced postoperative pain and a quicker recovery from surgery. These benefits are particularly important for active children who are eager to get back to their normal daily routines. Quicker recovery time means less time spent in the hospital following surgery, reducing emotional stress levels for children — and their parents.

The pediatric urology procedures performed robotically include ureteropelvic junction obstruction, pyeloplasty, orchiepexy and nephrectomy.

Thoracic Surgery

Thoracic surgery is the practice of medicine directed toward the surgical treatment of diseases of the chest including cancers of the lung, esophagus, and chest wall; birth defects of the chest; and tumors in the organs contained in the chest cavity.

Complex procedures like thoracic surgery require an excellent view of the operative field and the ability to maneuver instruments within the chest cavity. Thoracic surgery performed robotically provides better control, dexterity and visualization than with an open procedure, allowing surgeons to offer patients the benefits of minimally invasive surgery, including less scarring, pain, blood loss and infection risk, a shorter hospital stay, reduced recovery time and better clinical results.

Urologic Surgery

The da Vinci® Surgical System is being used by an increasing number of surgeons worldwide for prostatectomy and other urologic procedures. This minimally invasive approach, utilizing the latest in surgical and robotics technologies, is ideal for delicate urologic surgery. This includes prostatectomy, in which the target site is not only tightly confined but also surrounded by nerves affecting urinary control and sexual function. Using da Vinci, your surgeon has a better tool to spare surrounding nerves, which may enhance both your recovery experience and clinical outcomes.
