Healthy Living Education Brings Community Together

The City Green Learning Farm and Clara Maass Medical Center healthy living partnership provides local low- income families hands-on learning opportunities about healthy eating through “Farm-to-Table Family Fun Nights” held monthly at the farm.

Families learn how to cook a simple healthy meal using seasonal items from the farm. And they also learn about the entire process – from how vegetables are grown, to how they are harvested, to how they can be prepared.

“Word got out and families started bringing extended family members. The group kept getting larger each month,” says Jennifer Papa, executive director, City Green. “Community members began sharing ideas on how to prepare healthy meals. The community impact is immense.”

RWJBarnabas Health’s nutrition expertise and City Green’s agricultural know-how go hand in hand. “It is a wonderful partnership,” she says.

A partnership that extends beyond education and ensures that those in greatest need have access to nutritious food. City Green runs farm stands and accepts federal food benefits, including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Women Infants and Children (WIC) and Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP).
