Subsidized Health Services
Subsidized health services are clinical programs that are provided despite resulting in a financial loss for the health care system.
In the spirit of fulfilling our non-profit mission to provide care to all in need, Barnabas Health provides a variety of highly specialized tertiary and quaternary services that would otherwise be unavailable in the region. Many of these programs – such as the state’s only burn center at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, the Children’s Hospital of New Jersey at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and The Unterberg Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center, operate at a break- even or an operating loss. In 2013, Barnabas Health dedicated more than $8.6 million to sustaining these programs and others.
Even though these high-quality, critical services are expensive to maintain, they are aligned with the system’s commitment to ensuring that families have access to the care they need – right here in New Jersey.
